Becoming an API Qualified Rigger
The American Petroleum Institute (API) offers a recommended practice (RP) called API RP 2D: Recommended Practice for Operation and Maintenance of Offshore Cranes. This document includes crucial information on training and qualification for personnel involved in offshore crane load rigging and handling.
What is an API Qualified Rigger?
An API Qualified Rigger is an individual who has successfully completed a training program adhering to the guidelines set forth in Appendix A3 of API RP 2D. This program equips them with the necessary knowledge and skills for safe and effective rigging operations. API qualified riggers must undergo periodic refresher training to maintain their certification.
What Does the Training Entail?
API recommends classroom instruction coupled with hands-on experience and assessments to gauge a student's understanding. The hands-on component typically covers proper inspection, use, and maintenance of rigging equipment like slings, shackles, and hooks. The training program generally addresses the following key areas:
- Rigging Hardware
- Rigging Slings
- Rigging Procedures and Safety Precautions
- Rigging Fundamentals
Maintaining Your Qualification:
The onus falls on employers to ensure their riggers receive refresher training at least every four years to retain their API qualification. Additionally, any significant medical condition that could hinder a rigger's ability to perform their duties safely might necessitate disqualification.
Where to Find Training
Several organizations and training providers offer API RP 2D compliant programs. Utilize a search engine to find qualified training providers in your area.
Important Note:
- While the API RP 2D serves as a widely recognized standard, it's crucial to stay updated on any potential regulatory changes or updates from governing bodies like the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) or the United States Coast Guard (USCG). These entities may have specific requirements for personnel involved in offshore rigging operations.
- By obtaining API RP 2D qualification and adhering to relevant regulations, riggers demonstrate their commitment to safety and best practices in the industry.
